How to Measure

As buildings age, they shift and settle, sometimes throwing off windows so they're no longer square. Even the windows inside brand-new buildings may not be perfectly proportioned. For these reasons, it can be challenging to precisely measure the dimensions of a window. Here are some tips to help you:
1. Measure each window thoroughly, horizontally at the top, center, and bottom; and vertically along both sides and at the center (always measure with a hard-edged ruler or steel tape - never a cloth tape).
2. If a window isn't square, consider an "outside mount," installing the treatment above the opening. This can be done in such a way that the headrail covers as little of the trim as possible. However, to minimize light leakage, we recommend that the shade overlap the window opening at least 2" on each side and at the bottom.
How to measure - standard windows
Below are the instructions for measuring your window for Inside Mount, or inside the window casing.
To find the width, measure the exact distance between the inside surfaces of the window frame at the top, middle and bottom, and use the narrowest width.
Do not make any width deductions. Our factory will make the necessary deductions.
To find the height, measure the exact distance from the inside surface at the top of the window to the sill.
Tips - Inside Mount
Inside Mount options allow you to mount the shade inside the window casing so that the headrail sits back into the window casing.
Inside-Mounting blinds and shades emphasizes the actual size of the window, and allows trim work to be visible.
Note your depth clearance before your purchase to ensure you have the minimum depth required to mount inside the frame.
Franklin Fabric takes the appropriate deductions for inside mount, so do not make allowances on your inside mount measurements.
Below are the instructions for measuring your window for Outside Mount, or outside the window casing.
To find the width, measure the outside width of the window frame. Add at least 3 inches for overlap (1 ½” per side).
To find the height, measure from the sill to the position of the top of the shade. If there is no sill, measure to where the blind is to reach.
Tips - Outside Mount
Outside Mount options allow you to mount the headrail above the window casing or on molding.
An Outside Mount options gives the illusion of a longer and wider window and can make a narrow window look larger.
Outside Mount may be necessary if the window is not deep enough to contain at least the shade or blind mounting brackets.
General Tips - for all Windows
Measure window accurately, and remember that all windows are not perfectly square.
For custom-ordered product, you will need to specify whether your blind or shade is inside mount or outside mount.
